What Your Wedding Photographer Wants You to Know About Florals: Advice from Kylie Farmer Photography

When planning your wedding or elopement, it’s easy to focus on the big details like venues and outfits, but have you thought about how flowers will impact your photos?

According to Kylie Farmer Photography, a Glacier Park elopement specialist, florals aren’t just a beautiful addition to your day—they’re essential for creating stunning, memorable images.

Kylie shared her expert insights with us, answering five questions about the role of florals in wedding photography.

What role do florals play in wedding day photos?

“Florals play a HUGE role in wedding day photos! Not only are flowers the perfect prop to keep your hands busy, but they also help elevate any dead space in an area! I’ve always said that flowers can make or break any wedding/elopement!”

Kylie emphasizes that florals go beyond just looking pretty—they bring energy, color, and texture to your photos, filling in visual gaps and tying the entire scene together.

Are there specific floral arrangements or styles that photograph better than others?

“Large installments are always the most eye-catching and provide the most WOW factor, especially when it comes to arches/arbors and bouquets! Also, adding flowers anywhere else throughout a wedding or elopement will always add an extra special touch. For example, if a florist provides flowers for a cake, flat lay, or even as accessories for different hairstyles, the viewer’s eye immediately notices those extra touches!”

From dramatic archways to dainty cake flowers, Kylie highlights how every floral detail adds personality and visual interest, making your photos uniquely yours.

What advice would you give couples about bouquet size and color?

“I LOVE a hefty bouquet, within reason! You don’t want it so big that it looks awkward against the subject, but you want it full enough to really pop in the photos! Trending colors and styles are always important to watch for, but on the other hand, off-the-wall designs are also eye-catching and can really elevate an image! Choosing colors that coincide with the season and overall style/aesthetic of the day is super important!”

A well-proportioned bouquet with thoughtful color choices can make or break your wedding photos. Kylie encourages couples to balance boldness with harmony by considering the season and their unique aesthetic.

What are your tips for keeping flowers fresh throughout the day?

“Keeping the flowers out of the heat is always best practice! Keep your bouquet in a vase with some water in it that you can continue using! A lot of travel is typically involved in an elopement day, so being able to let the flowers drink when possible is super helpful!”

For couples tying the knot outdoors or on the go, this practical tip can help your flowers stay vibrant and photo-ready from start to finish.

What moments during the day benefit most from floral design?

“On a traditional wedding day, using flowers to elevate the ceremony space is key! I’m talking about installments that are show stopping, not just a couple of arrangements on the corner of the arch. Another space on a wedding day where flowers really make an impact is the reception space along the tables! Fresh flowers really elevate a tablescape!”

“On an elopement day, a substantial bouquet will add extra color as well as emphasis on the couple. Flowers have a way of drawing the eye directly to them, so if the couple is holding a bouquet, that’s where your eyes will go. Making that bouquet show stopping is the best way to elevate the use of flowers during an elopement where flower use is minimal anyway!”

Whether it’s a full-scale ceremony or an intimate elopement, Kylie encourages couples to invest in floral designs that captivate. From lavish arches to simple yet striking bouquets, the right flowers create unforgettable moments and images.

Kylie Farmer Photography’s insights show just how much florals can elevate your wedding or elopement photos. Whether you’re planning a large celebration or a small adventure in Glacier Park, thoughtful floral design will make your images unforgettable.
